Zhongshan Academy

Built on Wangjing Street in the county seat in 1525, later renamed Biaozhong Shrine

According to a scenic-area website, Wang Congshan built Zhongshan Academy on Wangjing Street in the county seat in 1525, and it was renamed Biaozhong Shrine in 1575; both dates await checking against gazetteers.

History

A page on the website of the Wuxiang Mountain Scenic Area, in its section on historic figures, states that in the fourth year of the Jiajing era (1525 CE) Wang Congshan built Zhongshan Academy on Wangjing Street in the county seat, and that in the third year of the Wanli era (1575 CE), after Qi Tai and other victims of the Jingnan purge had been rehabilitated, the academy was renamed Biaozhong Shrine.

Points of doubt

  • Both the year of construction, the fourth year of Jiajing, and the year of the change of name, the third year of Wanli, come from a website run by the scenic area itself. The page carries no issuing body and no date, is of limited authority, and the dates must be checked against gazetteers or heritage records before any conclusion is drawn.
  • The sources used do not record the layout, scale, period of existence or surviving remains of Zhongshan Academy.
  • The objects of worship and the ritual arrangements after the academy was renamed Biaozhong Shrine are not recorded in the sources used.
